Playa del Carmen is a small city located along the shores of the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo. About an hour-and-a-half south of Cancun, Playa del Carmen is one of the most popular tourist cities in the eastern part of Mexico.

Playa del Carmen, referred to as Playa by locals, is a stop for many cruise ships which dock about six miles south of the city at Calica. Playa has its own water transportation in the way of modern, fast ferries that run passengers and cars from the mainland over to the island of Cozumel.
The city of Playa has a large expat population that consist of Canadians, Americans and various Europeans as well as South Americans. The overall atmosphere of Playa is much more laid back than Cancun, and for many reasons, has become a popular choice for those looking to buy property.
