Cancun awarded as best business destination
It’s no secret that hundreds of thousands of visitors arrive to the Cancun International Airport every year to take in the natural beauty of the area. Now, however, people are arriving for other reasons.
Cancun has been awarded the most important place for congress and convention events in Latin America. The award was presented by the Maritz Travel Company during the recent World Meetings Forum held at the Cancun Convention Center.
Eduardo Chaillo, regional director for Latin America at Maritz Travel Company, explains that Mexico is leading the way in three top sun and sand destinations for business conferences. Cancun is first choice for business conferences followed by Los Cabos.
Puerto Vallarta comes in third place followed by other Latin American destinations such as Argentina, Costa Rica, Brazil and Colombia.
Fabian Delgado Pimental, president of the Mexican Association of Exhibitions, says, “Out of three business events, two go to a beach resort, favoring Cancun first, which is why we place first nationally with many conferences and conventions.”
Business markets in the United States and Europe seek special places to host their business events and Cancun has been deemed an excellent location for conferences and conventions, although campaigns by the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Board of Mexico encourage business events from all countries.
This year, it is expected that business conferences will increase 25 percent. Currently, Cancun has more than 2,000 business to consumer events and fairs booked for 2015. There are more than 500 business to business events and about 450 conference / conventions booked on both a national and international level.
This branch of Mexico’s business tourism generates over $32 billion and employs over 800,000 people every year, says Eduardo Chaillo. He says those figures include everything from audiovisual professionals and writers and editors to language translators.
