Cancun to promote sustainable tourism for other tourist regions of the state
The Convention and Visitors Bureau of Cancun have set out to promote the state of Quintana Roo as one of sustainable tourism. Dedicated to sustainability and environmental conservation, the director of the agency, Jesus Almaguer Salazar, said that they will sign a strategic alliance with Sustentur in order to preserve the natural beauty.
This strategic alliance directly involves Cancun, Puerto Morelos, Contoy, Isla Mujeres and Holbox. All destinations that are committed to ways of developing sustainability and preservation of their natural resources.
Almaguer Salazar explained that, “We want tourists to not only be amazed by the natural beauty and the warmth of our people. We also want them to know the efforts of our society, government and nature conservation that join in these projects.”
The General Director of Sustentur, Vicente Ferreyra Acosta, said that “sustainable tourism has gone from being just a trend. It is now an issue of tourism competitiveness.” And that Cancun as a global tourist spot has elements to achieve a position in sustainable tourism with protected areas:
- Protected Area Yum Balam Flora and Fauna,
- Biosphere Reserve Whale Shark
- Convoy Island National Park,
- the West Coast National Park Isla Mujeres.
- Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc,
- Protection Area Mangrove Wildlife Nichupte
- the Reef Puerto Morelos National Park.
He explained that there are certified and environmental management systems, speciesprotection programs and schemes PES hotels, who make donation toward the conservation of forests and proposals for nature tourism activities, things Cancun and the Riviera Maya are very well known for.
