With tourist high season here and a near-100 percent occupancy rate, car rentals in Cancun and throughout the Riviera Maya have hit a peak. Car rental companies in the area are saying that the demand for rentals is so strong, they’ve had to bring in additional vehicles from other cities.
The demand for car rental services, according to local agencies, has experienced increases up to 180 percent. They say that the Cancun-Riviera Maya region are the major destinations where demand is greatest.
Many car rental agencies are saying that 2015 has been their busiest and most successful since they began operating in the state, some even saying that they’ve maintained oppucancy rates as high as 80 percent throughout the year.
Oscar Gomez, general manager for one of the leasing companies in the Riviera Maya, says that “In the high season demand increases up to 150 or 180 percent.” He adds that Easter, summer holidays and the month of December are the busiest with the highest demand for car rentals.
The most common car requested by domestic tourists are compact vehicles that can manage up to five passengers, while international visitors request medium to large units such as SUVs and trucks.
Compact cars can be rented for around 750 peso per day while large SUV-type vehicles made for 9 or more passengers can easily run a few thousand peso per day by the time you include insurance and taxes.
The extreme demand that local leasing companies are currently experiencing will continue until mid-January for domestic tourists, but foreign visitors will keep the car rental companies busy well into the month of February as they continue to head south for sun and sand.
Car rental rates are managed by the Vehicle Leasing Association of Quintana Roo.
