International Music Festival Opening with First All-female Orchestra
The Mexican Women’s Symphony Orchestra will debut the opening of the 2016 International Music Festival.
More than 500 women applied to be part of the all-female orchestra, however, only 60 women from across the country were chosen. The group of musicians will perform with musical flair inspired from European classical music with a Mexican flair.
Daniel Pañalver, artistic director of the festival, said that the inclusion of women in the orchestra is a highlight considering only a few years ago, local symphony musicians were predominantly male.
The women chosen to perform in the upcoming symphony were selected from regions of Mexico from other Mexican orchestras from Veracruz, Yucatan, Chihuahua, Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi Jalisco, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Campeche, Oaxaca, as well as Mexico City, totaling 21 different cities.
The Mexican Women’s Symphony Orchestra will play at Oasis Arena in Cancun on October 8, however, the International Music Festival runs from October 8 to 22. This year’s events include 17 concerts with music from more than 400 artists from around the world.
