It’s Playa del Carmen’s 23rd Anniversary!
Although the city itself is slightly more established, today marks the 23rd year since Solidaridad, headed by Playa del Carmen, became the eighth municipality in the state of Quintana Roo.
During its inauguration year, Playa del Carmen was barely more than 10,000, an enormous change with a current population of over 250,000.
It was July 28 1993, when Mario Villanueva, then state governor, read for the first time the Decree creating the Municipality of Solidarity before a crowd of just over 200 people. Over the years, Playa del Carmen has risen in global popularity as a preferred international beach destination and continues to rank within the top 25 places to visit.
With 42,000 hotel rooms in and around the Riviera Maya, the municipality of Solidaridad is a thriving destination of beauty for investors and tourists.
Today, city officials will be celebrating the municipality’s success in style. At 6:00 p.m., everyone is welcome to the city theatre where government officials, as well as numerous special guests, will be presenting an anniversary ceremony.
Congratulations to Playa del Carmen and everyone who has made this city such a safe and wonderful place to live!
