Month of February sees record number of international tourists in Cancun
Each year it seems tourist numbers grow and this year was no exception. The amount of international visitors to Cancun and the Riviera Maya in February alone broke previous records, not to mention predictions.
Projections by the Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Department of Tourism were proven wrong during the month of February. Record-breaking numbers of visitors made for an increased market with Americans, Germans and Mexicans.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the Department of Tourism anticipated the same situation as in other months, but instead, reached an occupancy rate 60 percent above the national average. The increase in February visits meant a 5.4 percent increase over the same month last year.
Hotel occupation rates for February in Cancun and Puerto Morelos sat at 88.5 percent.
Francisco Lopez Reyes, director of Tourism in Benito Juarez, says, “Increases in the U.S., German and Mexico market saw 4.5 percent more visitors from those countries over last year as tourists are arriving to enjoy the attractions of Cancun and its surroundings.”
“The long term forecast has been extended and we have had significant numbers of hotel occupation, showing the highest interest of domestic and foreign visitors for Quintana Roo,” said Laura Fernandez Pina, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo.
According to the Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos (AHC), the economic benefit for the month increased 11.8%, reflecting revenue $18.4 million compared to $416 million over the same month last year.
Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR) reports that in February, 57 flights recorded 6,000 flights, of which 5,520 were international.
