More than 430,000 visitors landed in January
Despite some rather unusually chilly days, Cancun and the Riviera Maya hosted over 430,000 international visitors during the month of January, a significant increase from the same time period in 2015 when the region saw 406,000 visitors.
The first month of the year was busy as statistics from the Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos showed an 82.8 percent occupancy rate. A large majority of travelers arrived to the sunny beaches from the United States and other states in Mexico where cold weather – and even snow – continues to send them seeking sun.
The average stay for American and Mexican visitors was only four nights, however, European visitors average a stay of 10 days.
Officials from the Hotel Association of Cancun and Puerto Morelos say that the region is doing well despite the cool temperatures and that last month, the 80+ percent occupancy rate is standard for this time of year.
The 82.8 percent occupancy rate was experienced by all-inclusive hotels in Cancun and Puerto Morelos while the Riviera Maya had an 82.1 percent occupancy rate. Hotels in the town center has an 82.9 percent rate.
Aeropuertos del Sureste (ASUR) reported an increase of 13.8 percent compared to January 2015, with the Cancun International Airport (AIC) passenger traffic amounting to more than 1.8 million people.
