New Freida Kahlo Museum Riviera Maya
Known as one of the most cultural corridors in the region, Playa del Carmen will soon be home to a new museum. Next year marks the 110th anniversary of Mexico’s famous Frida Kahlo, making it an ideal time to implement a museum dedicated to the famous artist.
The museum is expected to cost between 25 and 30 million peso and will be the second in the world dedicated to her work.
Currently, Playa del Carmen is home to the Frida Kahlo restaurant which is located on the famous Fifth Avenue shopping plaza and the corner of 8th Street. Local officials involved in the development of the museum have decided to place it next to the restaurant.
Once built, the Frida Kahlo Museum Riviera Maya will showcase original works by Frida as well as Diego Rivera. There is also a possibility that the museum will display other local talent that could be for sale.
This would be the third museum for the Riviera Maya, the other two being the Museum of Prehistory near cenote Dos Ojos and the 3D Museum located in the central of Playa del Carmen.
Born Magdalena Carmen Frida Kahlo Calderón, Frida Kahlo was from Mexico City and become globally known for her self portraits.
Kahlo had a volatile marriage with the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera. An auto accident as a teenager saw her suffer lifelong health problems, many of which isolated her from other people. It was this isolation that influenced her works, many of which are self-portraits. Kahlo is quoted as saying, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.”
