Smoke Free Beach in Playa del Carmen

Posted By on September 6, 2016

Not a lot of people know that Playa del Carmen has a smoke-free beach, but the fact is we do. It’s a public beach in centro Playa del Carmen known as Fundadores Park which is located toward the south portion of city center near the Paseo mall.

If you don’t have your Playa bearings down just yet, don’t worry. Most people know the park — which is the smoke-free beach — by the massive statue that hangs over the area.

Last year, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks prepared the legal framework to establish this public beach as certified smoke free. It became the second smoke-free beach in the region, the first being San Martin beach in Cozumel back in 2011.

The ordinance to create the smoke-free beach was backed by the United Nations Organization, Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization.

Every year, beach cleaning efforts remove several tons of sandy butted-out cigarettes along Playa del Carmen shores, a pollutant that has many environmentalists concerned. The chemicals found in one cigarette butt can leach out and contaminate approximately 7.5 liters of water within one hour.

Having a smoke-free beach is a first healthy step not only for non-smokers to enjoy, but also where cigarette butt littering does less damage to our beautiful beaches.
