Today marks the official beginning of summer on Maya calendar
Today around Playa del Carmen people can enjoy a true Maya celebration with a pre-Hispanic ceremony to help bring in the first day of summer. The annual event marks the beginning of planting season for agriculture centers, according to Maya traditions.
Hermelindo Be Cituk, coordinator of the event, says that today is a special date for the Maya because it initiates the moment of planting. “Fortunately the rains have already begun and that is very important because it allows the land to get ready to receive the seeds. Now, we will wait unitl September when it will be harvest season with coincides with the autumnal equinox.”
Be Cituk says that the celebration is very important for everyone because it helps the traditions not be forgotten. “Hopefully people will come to appreciate this old custom and in turn, can be transmitted from generation to generation as has happened in the past,” he says.
The summer solstice marks the end of spring and the beginning of summer and is the longest day of the year.
Anyone interested in witnessing this traditional Maya event can head to the Maya Piolosphical Center for a 5:00 p.m. start time. The center is located on Ave. 20 and 106th Street in the colony of Luis Donald Colosio Murrieta.
If getting to the Maya center is not do-able, other ceremonies will be held this evening at the Maya Portal in central Playa del Carmen.
