Q. What makes owning a home in Playa different than buying in Cancun, for example. What makes Playa special?
A. Over the past 20 years, Playa del Carmen has grown from a small fishing village to a city of more than 200,000 people. While some prefer the old times, most are very happy with the city status since the growth brought with it many name-brand stores such as Walmart, Home Depot, Sears, Kia, Old Navy, Starbucks and H&M just to name a few. The choices for Playa del Carmen residents has increased, which means our quality of life has increased.
When it comes to quality of life, one of the largest concerns for foreigners is healthcare. With continued growth, Playa Del Carmen now has a very good healthcare system, one that is comparable to the US. We have knowledgable and up-to-date doctors that practice with state-of-the-art technology in very modern hospitals. The quality and cost of things like dental care is also very good and very affordable.
Development has also made Playa del Carmen very accessible. The Cancun International Airport is the second busiest in the country with as many as 4 million visitors arriving during high-season months. Every year, more and more US and Canadian cities add or increase their direct flight routes to Cancun. Passengers can easily catch the local ADO bus (or private shuttle if preferred) from the airport directly to Playa del Carmen. The ADO bus, for example, leaves the Cancun airport approximately every 30 minutes bound for downtown Playa del Carmen and costs around $165 peso.
Playa del Carmen as a place to live is actually very different from Cancun. Not only is it less congested and less big city-like, it is also more personal. Many of the true locals are of Maya decent and offer the area a sense a personableness that Cancun seems to lack. Although Playa attracts tourists from around the world, the city still has a town-like feel where local Maya customs retain an influence in the way of food, entertainment and shopping. They are a very laid-back, relaxed people, something that affects everyday life here.
Living in Playa del Carmen means adjusting to these local customs. If you are able to kick back and adapt your mindset, you will love the area and everything it has to offer including the amazing beaches, natural jungle, beautiful nature and relaxing lifestyle.
